The verdict: the widest capability of anything on this list — barbell rack, pull-up bar, adjustable dip station, dual cable pulley system with an 88.5kg stack on each side — and the best-proven Smith Machine we've found for a UK garage, at 4.6 stars from 36 reviews.
The honest reality: it needs a genuine footprint (196cm wide x 156cm deep) and two people for the 2–4 hour assembly. This isn't a spare-corner purchase.
Who it's for: anyone who wants to lift heavy with a real barbell for years, not just tone up.
Who it's not for: anyone without the floor space to spare, or who'd rather not deal with a multi-hour build.

Cardio: pick your machine
Two honest options here, because "cardio" means different things depending on what you actually enjoy doing.
Concept2 RowErg — £990.00
The verdict: the rowing machine every serious reviewer and gym owner points back to — 4.8 stars from nearly 11,000 UK ratings, a 5-year frame warranty, and a design that's barely changed in 30 years because it doesn't need to.
The honest reality: it splits into two pieces on caster wheels for storage, so it doesn't live permanently mid-room — but assembled, you'll want roughly 2.7 metres of clear floor space to row comfortably.
Who it's for: anyone who wants a proper full-body cardio session and doesn't mind the split-and-store routine.
Who it's not for: anyone who just wants to walk or run without thinking about technique.

DECORCN Foldable Treadmill, 7HP — £399.99
The verdict: this is the one we actually use ourselves. 7HP motor, 20 auto-incline levels, and it folds flat on four transport wheels for a smaller footprint than either the Smith Machine or the RowErg.
The honest reality: 4.9 stars sounds great until you notice it's from only 36 reviews at time of writing — a thinner track record than the RowErg's, so treat the rating as encouraging rather than proven. It's held up well for us so far, but that's one household's experience, not a large sample.
Who it's for: anyone who'd rather walk or run than row, or wants the smaller footprint.
Who it's not for: anyone after a fuller-body workout in the same time.

Tech: JASZDOT Smart Gym Mirror — £1,299.00
The verdict: a 32" touchscreen built into a 63" full-length mirror, running guided workouts through its own Android system — and, unusually, no ongoing subscription required.
The honest reality: it currently has just one UK review. One. The concept is genuinely appealing, but this is us flagging an early-adopter product, not a proven one.
Who it's for: anyone who wants guided sessions without a monthly fee and is comfortable being an early adopter.
Who it's not for: anyone who needs hundreds of reviews before spending four figures — wait a few months and check back.

Recovery: Oura Ring 4 — from £190–£279
The verdict: this is the one we wear ourselves, daily. Sleep, readiness and stress scores, resting heart rate and HRV trends, all passively collected from a titanium ring rather than a screen competing for your attention.
The honest reality: the ring itself is a one-off cost, but the full app experience runs on a £5.99 a month or £69.99 a year membership on top — the detail most reviews skip past.
Who it's for: anyone who wants recovery data without doing anything beyond wearing it.
Who it's not for: anyone who won't tolerate an ongoing subscription stacked on top of the hardware cost.

Build it in stages
You don't need to buy all five at once.
Stage 1 — £849.95. Just the Smith Machine. Covers the vast majority of a real strength session — squats, bench, pull-ups, cable work — on its own.
Stage 2 — up to £1,850. Add a cardio machine (RowErg or treadmill). Strength and cardio are both covered now, for under half the full setup's cost.
Stage 3 — up to £3,800. Add the mirror and the ring once the habit's locked in and you know you'll keep using the space. These are the pieces worth having once you're consistent, not the ones that get you started.
